The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted standardized testing requirements for college admissions. Most universities adopted a test-optional policy due to limited access to test centers. Many students took advantage of the test-optional policy and they were able to apply to universities solely based on their GPA and extracurricular activities. From 2021 to 2023, all test-optional universities saw an exponential rise in the number of applications leading to the lowest acceptance rates colleges have seen in the history of admission processes.
In 2022, MIT reinstated the standardized testing requirement, followed by Georgetown University and the University of Florida.
For the Class of 2029, Dartmouth was the first Ivy League to enforce the standardized testing requirement for undergraduate admission which was closely followed by Brown University. As the pandemic ended, the universities analyzed their data and realized the importance of standardized test scores. Other renowned universities like Harvard and UT Austin, Texas have also reinstated the requirement for standardized testing for the class of 2029.
Yale has taken a completely different stance on standardized testing by starting a new test-flexible policy. According to this policy, Yale will consider any one of the standardized tests. You could submit your ACT, AP, IB, or SAT scores. You do not need to submit all of them. The students who decide to submit an AP or IB score can fulfill Yale’s requirements by submitting a minimum of one completed AP or IB exam. If you took an AP or IB class but were not able to complete the exam, Yale University will provide an optional free-response question about testing details to share your reasons for not taking the exam.
As students come across diverse requirements from universities, we highly recommend you keep your options open and make a plan to take the SAT or the ACT. Even though the scores are a small part of your application, a good score adds to your strengths. Taking the SAT or the ACT demonstrates your academic rigor and enhances your college prospects. A good score provides a wider array of opportunities while creating a balanced college list and helps you pursue your dreams and achieve your goals.
